What's your business, and who are your customers?
Sound Speech Pathology is an outpatient speech-language pathology clinic that provides speech, language, swallowing, and cognitive therapy services to individuals of all ages with a variety of diagnoses that inhibit communication, attention, memory, or feeding/swallowing.
Tell us about yourself
I decided to become a speech-language pathologist when I visited a family friend at work and saw how rewarding her job seemed. It is always an honor to be part of the celebration when a child with Apraxia learns new sounds, a delayed talker says "mom" for the first time, a baby improves feeding skills and finally gains weight, or an individual with a brain injury masters a goal and gets a little piece of their life back.
I decided to start my own practice after seeing the lack of local service options in this area and realizing how unhappy a lot of therapists were when working for companies that focused more on revenue and less on patient care.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Creating an amazing team and providing an environment for them to take pride in patient care and lifelong learning.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The financial hardship of starting a business from scratch and waiting for it to grow.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Start slow and keep your previous job as long as possible.
- Have a saving to get you through the slow beginning.
- Apply for insurance network contracts as soon as possible and follow up often.
