Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sophie Hung, Founder of Sophie Hung-Nutrition and Fitness, located in San Gabriel, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have been a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist for more than ten years and a Certified Personal trainer for more than five years. I help busy professionals to lose fat, gain muscle and nourish their bodies through my flexible one-on-one online nutrition and fitness program called A Healthier You Journey program. I also help the client to control blood sugar, reduce cholesterol/triglyceride, reduce blood pressure, minimize inflammation, and eat balanced vegetarian nutrition. I don't believe in quick fixes but rather focus on sustainable lifestyle change by providing high accountability and helping them establish new healthy mindsets, routines, and behaviors throughout their journey.

Tell us about yourself

I have a family history of diabetes, stroke, and cancer. My dad has both high blood sugar and high cholesterol. Growing up, I never received any nutrition education from my parents or in school. My interest in nutrition sparked when I was studying at UCLA for my undergrad. I learned a lot about nutrition from the monthly nutrition topic on the dining hall table. Then I told myself maybe that's an area I can help people with, and most importantly, my dad. I like the preventive aspect of nutrition. When I did my internship in the hospital, I saw some diabetic patients that are suffering from some serious complications, including losing their legs or being in dialysis for the rest of their life. I wish I had gotten to know them earlier and helped them prevent it.

I have specialized in Asian and Latino cuisine since I was born in Hong Kong and studied abroad in Spain and South America. Besides English, I also speak Mandarin, Cantonese, and Spanish.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

For the longest time, I was a solopreneur. Recently, I went to a mastermind retreat and realized that the only way to keep growing and scaling up is to build a team. So I recently hired a co-coach and started training her. That's definitely a huge breakthrough for me.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

  • Self-motivation. Since you are your own boss, there is no one there to tell you what to do. You would need a lot of self-motivation to keep pushing yourself.
  • Persistence. You may hear 100 No's before you hear 1 Yes, don't give up and keep going.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Imperfect action is better than standing still.
  2. Investing in yourself (coaching/mentoring/attending conference) is so valuable.
  3. Always come with a helping hand and find ways to add value for people.
