Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Marty Dodson, Co-Founder of SongTown, located in Nashville, TN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Songtown is a worldwide company providing community, coaching, and connection for songwriters.

Tell us about yourself

I have been a pro songwriter for almost 25 years, have written ten #1 songs, and have had more than 150 songs recorded. In 2012, Clay Mills and I decided to give back by educating aspiring songwriters to help them learn the business and improve their craft.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

One of our students just wrote the #1 pop song in the world! We have helped 16 people get staff writing deals, and many of our students have hit on charts around the world. We love helping people chase and catch their songwriting dreams!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Finding time to write my own songs and to keep coming up with creative ways to teach different aspects of songwriting.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Use your resources wisely.
  2. Make sure you can serve your customers well before you try to grow at a faster rate.
  3. Grow along with your customer base - continually evolve to keep helping them as they progress on their journey.
