Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amelia Anthony, Chief Brand Officer of Son of a Barista, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Son of a Barista produces artisanal coffee to brew any espresso-based drink within our coffee pod system. Our coffee is produced by artisans using traditional methods. Flavor, texture, and crema are Italian—in spirit, production, and perfection. We choose organic and Fair Trade coffee beans from around the world, roast and grind them in Italy, and create blends that delight any coffee drinker’s palate. Our customers are everyone who demands high-quality coffee and convenience at home or in the office.

Tell us about yourself

A genuine passion and love for the product made me want to work in the business. The coffee truly is superior to anything on the market, and with this conviction, it made it easy for me to sell the product to others ethically. I wouldn’t be able to sell something that I don’t believe in, and tasting Son of a Barista coffee for the first time, I immediately knew that this is something I personally want to drink every day.

The motivation for working on the business comes from a passion for creativity, problem-solving and creating something out of nothing. The fact that we are filling a gap in the market for a convenient way to drink quality coffee is definitely a cherry on top and something that makes me proud.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Collaboration with others is paramount in a start-up and is extremely satisfying. As a start-up, you need to call in favors, think outside the box, and lift people up to help unlock hidden talents. Collaborating with others is one of my greatest accomplishments.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

You hold a great responsibility to the customer. Your product affects the customer’s daily routine, so everything about the product needs to be perfect. The customer lets you enter their personal space, and your product becomes a part of their routine, especially something as intimate and ritualistic as coffee, so the trust they give you must be handled with respect.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

You have to have grit throughout the process, passion for the product, and be able to dream. Not in that order, but all at once.
