Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Zoe Peterson, Founder of SOMA Therapeutics, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am an intuitive healer who works with individuals with chronic pain or postural issues. My work is a melding of the Western sciences of kinesiology, biomechanics, and behavioural design (our physical and mental realms) and Eastern philosophical and esoteric principles (our realms of soul and spirit). I use movement and the teachings of our body as the access to self, soul, and higher states of consciousness.

Tell us about yourself

After finishing a degree in Kinesiology, I began my work specializing in injury rehabilitation and the management of chronic pain, primarily using therapeutic exercise to address my patients' concerns. After several years in this field, I began to see the gaps in the service I provided. Though an injury or external event may be the initial cause of our discomfort, we can often trace our symptoms and complaints even further back to our patterns.

Patterns of movement, behaviour, thought, perception, emotion, action, & inaction. Our patterns are influenced by endless external forces and embodied historical memories. To change our life and our health experience, we must change our patterns. We must excavate and unravel the habitual actions and conditioned responses that are keeping us stuck. Then we have to consistently show up for ourselves and reinforce the patterns we desire.

Realizing this, I left my job in the clinical field and started my own business. These days, I get to show up and serve my clients in ways that create true lasting change in their lives. I love seeing my clients step into their power and reclaim their life force.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My greatest accomplishment, by far, is getting over the fear of starting. Learning and embodying the understanding that all great success starts with action. In terms of my client results, I am grateful to have led hundreds of clients on their journey out of chronic pain and been blessed to see them go on to do things they previously thought impossible: having a child, returning to work, scaling their business, running a marathon, living in peace, moving with freedom, and so much more.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the greatest challenges and opportunities that comes with being a business owner is that the business is always a perfect reflection of my own internal state and the way I am showing up. When I'm relaxed, confident, and peaceful, the business flows, my clients are lovely, and money comes in abundance. When things get rough, I know it's not something to be fixed "out there" in the business but "in here" in my own patterns of thinking and ways of doing and being.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Create from inspiration, not obligation. From pleasure, not pressure. Get clear on why you want to run this business and how you want to serve. What you create from love and abundance cannot fail. What you create from scarcity and lack will always bring more friction.
  2. Spend your time on the things that matter most. Get crystal clear on who you serve, what you offer, why you do it, and why it's the best thing since sliced bread. Don't get bogged down with shiny objects (logo design, website creation, etc.).
  3. Get help. Entrepreneurship is an entirely different skill set from the skills you've developed to deliver the service. Get a coach, read books, and get feedback.
