Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jessica Solorzano, Founder of Solo Restore Thai Massage, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

That's a very simple question with a very detailed answer, but I will keep it short. My business has always been focused on self-care. I've seen it go from primarily a massage therapy business to what it is now, which is a Wellness Coaching and Reiki business, but I keep some aspects of massage therapy in it since I've been practicing massage since 2012! Right now, my clients are people with anxiety, insomnia, or who want to connect better with food and are looking to take charge of their well-being in between sessions with guidance from me.

Tell us about yourself

Through massage therapy, I've always been fascinated by self-care and have always been passionate about teaching people how to take care of themselves. I first worked in a spa to practice my skills and started learning self-massage, then Yoga, Ayurveda, and Reiki. Seeing people benefit from my guidance inspires and motivates me to keep doing what I do. I also love seeing them become more self-reliant and listen to their bodies more.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is showing people the benefits of planning their wellness ahead of time instead of when there's an injury or something feels off in their body. When I see them come back on a regular basis and seeing them show up for themselves makes me so happy.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Navigating this social media-focused world and seeing how it's one of the most popular ways to market. As someone who values face-to-face connection and also doesn't like spending too much time on social media, it makes things challenging. I'm still trying to think of ways to practice moderation and use social media to promote myself consistently. I'll figure it out one day!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do your research before jumping in. Take your time.
  2. Start a business from a place of feeling inspired and not from being stressed. If you need a primary source of income, use that to support your business.
  3. Be organized but don't worry about being a perfect business owner.
