Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in clothing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brandon Ellis, Vice President of Sales and Marketing of Sock Harbor, located in San Francisco, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a wholesale and retail novelty sock company. Our mottos are 'socks for everyone' and 'life is too short to wear white socks,' so basically, anyone's our customer.

Tell us about yourself

Early in 2016, we had the idea that novelty socks were the final frontier of personal expression, so we decided to open a sock store. After opening the store, we decided to start our own line of socks, Bigfoot Sock Co, which focused on active novelty socks. We then started Sock Harbor, a more general novelty line of socks. Our daily motivation is to convince people to do away with their plain white socks.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

From a wholesale point of view, we have accounts in all 50 US states and distribution in Chile and Canada. For retail, we operate over 20 permanent sock stores and are opening 37 seasonal pop-up shops from San Diego to Seattle.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Staying on top of what will sell.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make your customer smile.
  2. Stay relevant.
  3. Have an open line of communication with your employees.
