Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in digital marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with John Cody, Founder of Social Spike Marketing Group, located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My company is called Social Spike Marketing Group, and we provide search engine optimization strategies and campaigns for small & medium sizes businesses. Our customers range from Financial Advisors to Healthcare professionals. We also work in the home services market as well.

Tell us about yourself

My agency is just about to hit three years in a month, but before that, I worked with another smaller agency for 4 years and a very large registrar before that. When I was let go from my previous agency, I knew it was time that I needed to go out on my own. I took what I learned from those previous jobs, learned even more about the industry, and applied this to my own. What motivates me each day is knowing that I'm in control. The life being created is up to me now, not another organization employing me. Success or failure comes down to my own actions. So it motivates me to stay ahead of the curve and always find ways to take the next step.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The business is still young, but hitting six figures in revenue for the first time as a business is always an exciting thing. It's almost a knowing that we have something here. Now how do we take this so we can help more people, hire more team members, and expand our horizons?

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Wearing many hats can be a heavy burden. In the agency world, not everything is roses and sunshine. There will be tough days that can make you second-guess yourself. Then you have amazing days where you feel invincible. The key is not giving in and not thinking in a way that doesn't serve you. You need to become more grateful for what you have and the confidence inside, knowing that you will always come out on top, regardless of the roadblocks or situations that might occur.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get out and start it. Perfection is your enemy; you can start a business out of the gate very easily.
  2. Always be learning. If you want to do some great things, you need to learn from those in your space that are great already.
  3. Your network is your net worth. If anything, you should always be focusing on building partnerships and a strong, mutually beneficial network. It can have a monumental impact on your bottom line.
