Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in public relations but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Maribel Salas, of Social PR, located in Chicago, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run Social PR – a global PR Agency to help entrepreneurs land in top-tier publications, become authors at their favorite publications, and generate viral press.

Tell us about yourself

I’m Mari, from Chicago – an ex-Facebook employee turned start-up founder :) I started Social PR for one simple yet cliche reason – freedom. I wanted the freedom to be able to live, travel, and work anywhere while still adding value to the world, no matter which country, continent, or time zone I was in. What motivates me is when I see the look on my client’s faces after we help them land in some of the biggest publications in the world! The impact of helping our clients generate press with millions of views is like magic, and I can say I feel extremely grateful and proud of the work that we do here at Social PR.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As the late Zig Ziglar says, “You will get everything you want in life if you just help others get what they want first.” That said – my biggest accomplishments have actually been less personal but more so in our clients’ success! We’ve helped tons of small business owners grow their brands using PR, as well as highly successful entrepreneurs who have exited companies for over $200M using the power of our Social PR strategies. To me, that’s an absolute win.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Finding work-life balance can be challenging at times! With constant demands from your clients, team, and partners…and still trying to find time for your family and friends!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don’t take advice from anybody who’s not where you want to be. I always say the world would be way different if everybody paid to give their opinion. 98% of people will never see your vision. Embrace that.
  2. Learn how to build from scratch – to watch what was once an idea manifest itself into the real world – this is a magical feeling you will chase for the rest of your entrepreneurial journey.
  3. Help others win. Sounds cliche, but the most successful people you know are actually bridges for other people – they stand between you and your desires and help build a boat for you to get across the river in the fastest, smoothest way possible.
