Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lindsay ONeill, Founder of Small Hinges LLC, located in Harrison, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Culinary Medicine + Data/Ai = Personalized Sustainable Health Transformations. What does that mean? Every BODY is different, so why do we all do the SAME diets, eat the SAME "health" food, and take the SAME medicine and supplements?

Our Small Hinges Health Programs use an exclusive data collection method to identify the BEST (easiest and most effective) plan for YOU to achieve and sustain optimal health.

Tell us about yourself

I spent 20+ years working in Ai/Data/Machine Learning for marketing and advertising applications. Then I got really sick. With three little kids at home, and now as a single mom, I can't be chronically ill.

So I tried everything to heal myself. 9 doctors, dozens of tests, crazy cleanses, and eventually, a boatload of knowledge of what works vs. what doesn't. It was an arduous and painful road to health. I kept thinking - "there must be a better way." So I set out to combine my expertise in data collection and analysis with personalized health plans that are sustainable forever. During my journey, I participated in two certification programs: Culinary Medicine via the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health & the Culinary Institute and Wellness Coach via ACE Fitness.

I LOVE working with individuals to transform their health. It fills my soul, warms my heart, and gives me hope for a happier, healthier world in our future. I also draw inspiration from my three daughters, who push me to ask "why," dig deeper for more knowledge, and love being a part of the transformations.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My business is built on results. We never take our foot off the gas... I always strive for more and over-deliver for my clients. But I am also looking for ways to automate and do things better to reduce the program cost and broaden our reach. Our biggest accomplishment is the health of our clients. Period.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

In the beginning, I was doing EVERYTHING - CEO, janitor, chief cook, personal assistant, IT, etc. while also caring for my children and home. I forgot to take care of myself, which is the point of my business! Self-care is a daily practice and struggle. I must remember not to take on my clients' problems as my own, stay focused on my expert perspective, then take time to unwind and care for myself.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Life is short. Stay rooted in your passion.
  2. Over-deliver on VALUE to your customers.
  3. Bring in advisors who can see the things you can't see - areas of opportunity, issues with the business, etc.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Have patience with yourself. You don't have to have everything built, know everything, have a fully formed business strategy, etc. Stay focused, but be flexible and fluid in your business. Fail fast, and forgive yourself when you do.
