What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the owner of SJL Professional Services, Inc., a consulting and coaching business. We present and train on mental health in the workplace, DEI, trauma-informed care, self-care, communication, and conflict resolution for organizations and small businesses. We specialize in ensuring that professionals understand the importance of workplace wellness and the need to improve overall wellness in the workplace, from leaders to front-line staff.

Tell us about yourself

In addition to SJL Professional Services, Inc., I am also the owner of Selah Wellness & Therapeutic Services, LLC, a mental health private practice that specializes in providing therapy and counseling to other mental health therapists, professionals, and couples. Twelve years ago, I recognized the need to help other helping professionals take care of their mental health so that they can be better stewards of their own lives.

As a result of that work, SJL Professional Services, Inc. was created to ensure that this work now extends to organizations and professional communities. We are able to share information that is transforming and life-changing. This motivates me to continue to help professionals from all areas take care of themselves and set boundaries with courage.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been sharing my work with the world through therapy, training/workshops, authoring seven books and journals, and meeting other professionals with whom I can share ways to live their best lives unapologetically. Through the people I meet and the lives I can impact, my business continues to exist for the sole purpose of serving others.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a business owner, one of the hardest things is finding the right people to task with managing different areas of your business. It takes time to identify the right team members, such as a CPA, bookkeeper, biller, and admin staff.

It took me over a year to find the amazing team that I currently have in place. There are challenges and growing pains, but it is all worth it knowing that my team is invested in what both SJL Professional Services, Inc., and Selah Wellness & Therapeutic Services, LLC, offer.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
