Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Andito Sutherland-Johnson, Founder and Owner of SJ Wellness, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a licensed clinical social worker and owner of SJ Wellness, a private practice that provides therapy and coaching to individuals and families. We value inclusion and are committed to centering the mental health and wellness of BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities.

Tell us about yourself

I had the privilege of working under the supervision of an amazing psychologist whose private group practice was an incredibly affirming space for LGBTQ+ folks and POC. It was affirming for the clients and for the clinicians, most of whom were Black women like myself. My experience there helped shape who I am as a clinician. When that group practice closed its doors, it felt important to continue the work in my own way. So I launched SJ Wellness in that spirit. I don't take for granted that my clients trust me with their vulnerability. It matters to me that they trust me. They matter to me. Their well-being matters to me, and that's what motivates me to do what I do each day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My business is still in its early stages, but I'd say my biggest accomplishment so far has been pushing past imposter syndrome and fear of failure to stay the course. That's not always easy to do, especially when things happen slowly and sometimes inconsistently. So, to keep trusting in myself and in the vision despite obstacles is a big accomplishment in my eyes.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I think one of the most challenging things that comes with being a business owner is managing money, especially if that's not your strength.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Consider working with a business coach to help you strategize and identify the types of support you'll need to run your business successfully.
  2. Use accounting software to keep track of day-to-day income and expenses and to calculate taxes from the start.
  3. Be consistent and patient.
