Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Noell Garza, Founder, and Owner of Simply Vela Candle Co. LLC., located in Galloway, Ohio, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our highly scented handmade premium soy candles provide a consistent, highly fragranced candle experience that not only smells great in the beginning but after each and every burn so you can enjoy beautifully simply home fragrance décor that will enhance any space in your home. My customers are those who see home fragrance as an extension of their space and home decor. Who value well-made, quality artisan products.

Tell us about yourself

I believe it matters where we choose to spend our hard-earned dollars, and it's important that there be value in what we purchase. My desire in starting Simply Vela Candle Co. was to create highly scented home fragrance products that consistently smell great and burn after burn so you can enjoy beautifully simple home fragrance décor that will enhance any space in your home. I am motivated each day by my customers. Their busy lives and all "the things" that need to be accomplished. And how at the end of a long day, the simple act of lighting a candle can create a mindful moment to check in with themselves.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

All the knowledge I have gained. I've had to self-teach all along the way, from learning the art of candlemaking (and that it's so much more than wax in a jar) to building my own website. It's an incredible feeling of accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Time management. Like many other small business owners, I still have a full-time job, a family, fur babies, and a home to take care of. Nailing down good time management skills is a must to prevent burnout.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Determine your vision for your business. Once you know this inside and out, making decisions is easier.
  2. Create/Know your customer avatar. Who is your ideal customer?
  3. Be prepared to be busy and wear many hats. Being a small business owner is not for the faint of heart.
