Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in soap making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Leslie Eichelberger, Owner of Simply Good Soap LLC., located in Columbia, SC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Simply Good Soap is a handcrafted bar soap, body butter, and body cream business that serves women who enjoy sustainably sourced, high-quality personal care products that are luxurious and affordable. With women being our predominant client, they purchase for their entire families, as our products are great for everybody's skin!

Tell us about yourself

I'm a retired Army wife who also homeschools as I run my business. I started making soap in 2012 out of sheer curiosity, and it snowballed into the business in 2014. I totally fell in love with creating soap that smells amazing, and that's good and nourishing for the skin.

Happy clients who love having happy skin keep me going! My family and I enjoy the products as well, and then there is just the magic of getting to create something that's so practical but, at the same time, a little everyday luxury.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to still love it and grow, as I'm in my 8th year! I also just became a part of Amazon Handmade, so I'm looking forward to more growth!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Running the business! When it's just you, even when you are outsourcing, you're still the primary decision-maker on everything. Staying on top of the marketing, social media, photography, income/expenses, etc., can be taxing on some days.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you absolutely love what you're about to do, or you will burn out quickly!
  2. Find your niche. Don't try to be all things to all people.
  3. Build a good outsourcing team—packaging, taxes, social media, legal, copywriter, etc. Whatever you need help with, don't be afraid to seek out the people you need.
