Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Robbie Farlow, Owner of Side Quest Fitness, located in Granville, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Side Quest Fitness helps moms & dads lose 10-20 pounds SUSTAINABLY in 100 days. But I also work with nonparents all over the world. Anyone who wants to improve their nutrition habits, increase strength, build lean muscle, and lose a few pounds will see success with my coaching.

Tell us about yourself

In 2012, I was overweight, out of shape, and constantly a miserable sack of poop who tried to hide from the fact that he was getting fatter by the day. I hated my body. I hated my job. And I felt like I wasn’t living the life I wanted to live. I knew I had more to offer the world, but all I was doing was playing endless hours of video games, drinking cases of beer, and getting more Jabba the Hutt-like by the day.

Then one Sunday, after washing away the smell of stale beer from the night before, I saw myself in the mirror. And it felt like a stranger was staring back at me. What I saw in that reflection was not what I wanted to show the rest of the world; it wasn’t the man I thought I was on the inside. I knew at that moment I had to make a change. So I hit the gym and dove head first into discovering the secrets that go into burning body fat and building lean muscle.

My mission in life is simple: to help 100,000 men become their best selves through effective diet, fitness, and self-help advice that’s practical and cuts through the Internet bullshit (with a little nerdtastic flare, of course).

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Starting a business after majoring in theater in college and having no clue what I was doing.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Balancing life and work.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. People before profits. Help people first. Profits come later.
  2. Starting something is better than doing nothing. You don't need to be a genius to succeed in business. But you do have to start things.
  3. Know what you value in life before you make any decision.
