Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and cosmetics but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Danielle Lawrence, Owner of SHOW A LITTLE SKINcare, located in Modesto, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

SHOW A LITTLE SKINcare is a corrective skin care clinic. I revise skin back to a healthy state, anything from severe acne, premature aging, eczema, rosacea, and pigmentation. I also provide unisex full-body waxing and spray tanning.

Tell us about yourself

I have been in business for over ten years. I am a definitive "skin nerd" I love the science behind what I do, so I knew I would be bored with the traditional "fluff 'n' buff" salon/spa style facials. The more difficult the skin condition, the more fun I have treating it. My clients are my motivation every single day. Helping clients regain healthy skin and watching them regain their confidence with it makes every day an amazing day at work. Even after a decade, I am excited to get to work every morning.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Building my own business from the ground up. This industry has an extremely high turnover/ failure rate. Most beauty businesses fail within the first two years. So to know that I have built something that has not only survived but thrived is a huge accomplishment all on its own.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being a sole proprietor & service provider is extremely difficult. I have had to wear all the hats and do all the things for ten years. I also have two young children at home as well, so there hasn't been a work/life balance for most of it. Getting up early with my littles to spend time with them and then being at work all too often until 1 am doing paperwork, cleaning & laundry. It has only been in the last year that I finally hired my assistant, which has been a lifesaver.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Hire a bookkeeper. You are in business to do what you love so unless you are a bookkeeper. You will save yourself a lot of time, stress, and money by having this stuff done by a professional.
  2. Set boundaries with your clients & stick to them.
  3. Know your worth and charge for your services accordingly. Don't discount yourself out of business & never ever run a Groupon deal for your business. It will never be worth it.
