Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tyler Shogren, Owner of Shogren Smithery, located in Bellevue, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Blacksmith that takes a core interest in tools for all trades, from axes and hammers to knives and spatulas. Most of my customers are those who take particular pride in high-quality tools in their respective fields.

Tell us about yourself

I found blacksmithing through Boy Scouts at a Merit badge Fair when I was 12, and the next day I built my first forge. When I turned 16, I knew that was what I needed to do full-time. Everything progressed very naturally, and when the pandemic broke out, the abundant amount of free time gave me exactly what I needed to make my business successful. The only thing I need to keep me motivated is to see who I was yesterday.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is that I am able to go to work every day with a smile on my face and go home with that same smile. Being able to do what I love every day makes every day worth really living.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Accounting, using Excel. The best and hardest part is that everything is reliant on me, so if I don't do it, then it won't get done, and those tasks can pile up fast.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If you aren't willing to work more than what you are getting paid for, you will never be paid more than you're doing. Giving is one of the laws of the universe, and you must willingly give and graciously receive.
  2. Know why you are doing it, and remind yourself every day.
  3. When you can, get someone else to do the simple jobs.
