Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Shelley Gulley, Founder of Blue Ocean Marketing Javentures, located in Melbourne, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Blue Ocean Marketing Javentures was born out of the idea of doing things differently. Creating the Unique Selling Position to help differentiate our clients. Why swim with the competition? Let's find a NEW pond! It's about your company's uniqueness, your differentiating factor, that will separate you from the rest. Our clients are anyone who desires to find new markets, opportunities, audiences, and different ways of marketing.

For the past year, I've been working with a Real Estate Network and decided to launch an online course tailored for Realtors to help get them started with Facebook Business Pages since many either don't have one or know how to use it to grow business.

Tell us about yourself

For the past two decades, I have constantly been redefining myself in marketing since it is constantly changing and the need to adapt is necessary. Launching my career from the more ancient "platforms" with the yellow pages and then into radio gave me the foundation and key sales & marketing principles that continue to guide me today. I was inspired to launch Blue Ocean Marketing Javentures to help clients find their Blue Ocean. My 5-year-old son is what motivates me every day. I'm a single full-time mom, so the drive is there to be successful for both of us.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

When I attract business, new clients, or projects because they've seen my work or follow me and want to know more about how I can help them. Every business's needs are so unique.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The most difficult for me is simply balancing being a mom and working. You are the one-person show, and the wheels must keep turning. When they stop, you have to find the next thing to keep the drive there.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be flexible. No matter what market you're in, things are constantly changing. So stay open and be flexible.
  2. Keep learning. Adapting is the key to success. Learning also keeps you humble.
  3. Know your WHY. Motivation runs out. We all face those tough challenges. You have to know your WHY, your purpose, and your drive so that you can remind yourself.
