Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Shannon Jones, founder of Shannon Reece Jones Photography, located in Spring, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Shannon Reece Jones Photography. SRJ Photography is a full-service photography studio proud to photograph expecting parents, newborn babies, children & families throughout the greater Houston area. The Shannon Reece Jones Photography studio is located in The Woodlands, TX. However, we do travel to you for an at-home lifestyle, as well as outdoor locations. The goal of each session is to create family keepsakes that your family will treasure and share with generations to come. Artwork includes beautiful fine art albums, custom framing & museum quality gallery-wrapped canvas. Everything is made just for you, your family, and your home. These are your forever memories, and I am so lucky to be sharing this special season of life with you and your family. I can't wait for your session!

Tell us about yourself

As a mommy to 3 babies, I know how fast time goes by. I know that those tiny toes and sweet smiles turn into big kids faster than we want them to. As your photographer, I am here to help you freeze time for just a little while. You will leave with a beautiful portrait of your family and will always be able to go back and remember this special season of your life.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment so far has to be the freedom of owning my own business. As a mom, I can't imagine a life where I have to ask a boss if I can leave because one of my babies needs to be picked up from school or for a day off if one of them has a special event they want me to attend. The freedom to make my own hours that fits my family's schedule is one of the greatest blessings.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

To be honest, running your own business is hard. In the beginning, you do really need to reach out to business coaches and mentors to make sure you are starting off on the right path. It can be lonely, and often there isn't anywhere to turn for answers. Building a community around you, with others in the same industry, really is so important to help you grow and thrive.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Three tips I'd give a new business owner:

  1. Know your numbers and run your cost of doing business from day one.
  2. Hire a bookkeeper and tax advisor to guide you on the right path for your business growth.
  3. Give it time. This is a marathon, not a sprint, and there will be lots of ups and downs along the way. Don't quit. Just recognize what isn't working, change that, and try again!
