Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Shani Hussain, Founder of Hatch-Me Therapy & Counselling Services, located in Mississauga, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a counselling and therapy business located in Mississauga, Ontario. Our clients are individuals, couples, and families all across the Greater Toronto Area who wish to improve their lives by enhancing their mental and spiritual health. We offer services such as Individual Counselling, Marriage & Couples Counselling, Child & Family Therapy, and Affection/Cuddle Therapy.

Tell us about yourself

I became motivated to start my business when I saw how other therapists I worked for would talk about and treat their clients. It seemed to be all about money for them, and they showed frustration and little care if their clients reached out between appointments. I genuinely love helping others and want that to come across in my practice.

I happily take client texts/calls even between sessions and do my best to help them in their time of need. I'm motivated by the humbling and challenging art of guiding others with their journey through life and self-discovery.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is creating a business where clients feel welcomed, understood, and supported. Nothing means more to our team than making sure our clients get value from our services and are able to ignite hope in even their darkest times.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest challenge for me has been hiring staff with genuine care towards their clients, as I do, as well as the knowledge and experience to guide them in an efficient and meaningful manner. Luckily, I've established a solid team of professionals that holds the same values as I do, and I see that through their clients' positive comments and rebooking rate.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be passionate about the business you wish to start. It can be very challenging at times, and we need passion to keep us motivated and drive our vision forward.
  2. Establish the fundamentals! Make sure you have a website developed and your business pages on sites like Google, Yelp, and Bing. Take time before hiring contractors that will create your content/website if you don't want to do this yourself.
  3. Cater to your clients' needs. You don't want to restrict yourself or your clients due to resources. Take the initial jump and invest in opportunities that will pay off in the long term.
