Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ebony Richburg, owner of Sev3ns Candles, located in Carrollton, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I’m Sev3ns Candles. I create homemade hand-poured candles. I make as natural candles as I can. I use 100% Natural Soy Wax, and I use cotton wicks to provide a clean burn with no zinc and lead. I also use vegan coloring to change the colors of my candles. Each of my candles has there own unique scent. I like maxing mixology candles; candles play with different scents and create something different that brings joy to your home.

Tell us about yourself

I always wanted to own something of my own. I have a hard time working for other companies because I feel like I’m worth more than what major companies provide workers. I enjoy being able to be me! I’m creative, weird, open-minded & very opinionated in a good way. ( I promise ) I hate having to shelter my personality or my thoughts from others, especially when you start seeing my ideas and opinion being implemented. The credit is taken away from me and making someone else look good like it was their idea. So when COVID hit, I was bored and just had an idea of making a great candle that wasn’t toxic like a lot of name-brand candles are. Then I started researching, asking questions, and testing. I failed a lot of times, but in that failure, I had some great feedback, and I took that and kept tweaking and tweaking, then I finally got it.

What motivates me is I know how special I am and the gift that I was born with. No matter my ups and downs, I’m a special individual that has a creative gift that will make an imprint on this world one way or another.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I followed through with perusing what I had started. I don’t know it all, and I’m still learning through the process of being a business owner. I’m still pushing for greatness for Sev3ns to be as big as my personality.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, it was starting from scratch and working to the top. Sometimes you feel like your ideas will just take off right away, but reality kicks in and provides you time to master your masterpiece, even if it is you having to start over and over again.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do your own research and follow your own beat.
  2. When it gets tough, don’t give up keep faith in yourself and push harder.
  3. Nothing is perfect, but when you are incorporating genuine wholeheartedness, that is your perfect.
