Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with the team of Setsu Scans, based in Singapore.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We don't do business. We do a kind of piracy where we translate Comics from Japanese/Chinese to English because most of the official company isn't gonna do it, or even if they do, it'll be under a paywall.

Tell us about yourself

First started working on May 2020, after Corona Outbreak. We just want to share happiness and make someone's life better by sharing comics for free and in their language.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

A huge fanbase. People appreciate our work, and we like it.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, it was funding to run the group. As we kind of do social work and share comics for free, we don't have a stable source of income.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

In my area, the tips I'd give to a person starting a translation group are:

  1. Get a legit translator and verify that he's not using a Machine Translator.
  2. You need good typesetting skills to make your work look professional; you also need good fonts too. Don't use Free fonts if you want to make your work look cool and catchy.
  3. You need patience if you want to grow your fanbase.
