Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Elizabeth Tauss, President & Owner of SET, LLC, located in Dix Hills, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

SET is a full-service business development firm providing outstanding professional technical writing, proposal management, and marketing services. Our clients are predominantly local and international architectural, engineering, and construction (A/E/C) firms.

Tell us about yourself

My background/training in Engineering, my passion for writing, and my strong vision for business development, first led me to choose a career path involving technical writing and opportunity pursuits in the A/E/C industry. As I gained more experience, I realized that I could leverage this experience to achieve my lifelong dream of opening my own business to work collaboratively with A/E/C industry leaders to help guide the innovative development of their business development strategies.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Developing long-lasting relationships with our growing and happy client base has truly been the most rewarding and fulfilling experience for me.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Becoming your "own boss" and having flexibility in my work schedule is great, but it definitely poses its own sets of challenges, such as finding the right balance between work and family. Finding that balance is sometimes a challenge. However, I find that surrounding myself with a great support system helps me manage all my competing family and business priorities.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Believe in yourself, and don't be afraid to take chances!
  2. If you are passionate about what you do, your work will speak for it. As Steve Jobs put it, "The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle."
  3. Always be professional and honest.
