Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Matthew Meddock, Owner of Sessions West Coast Deli, located in Newport Beach, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We believe the best experiences transpire from breaking the rules and following your instincts. Our intuition led us to create a brand that's turning the restaurant industry upside down by serving up an unorthodox local vibe with imaginative unmatched flavor profiles that represent our West Coast culture.

Our customers become indoctrinated with true California spirit as tourists and locals alike partake in creative culinary dishes. We might be biased, but we have the most badass customers on the planet. Maybe it's due to the nostalgic ambiance buzzing through our four dining locations in Orange County, drawing in surf dads and cool moms who reminisce about radical times with friends and little groms running barefoot with sandy feet. The surrounding community of grass-roots active sports culture feeds into the misfit energy as surfers, skaters, and beachgoers make Sessions their local hub.

Tell us about yourself

I was born and raised in Southern California, living and breathing our culture and lifestyle. When it dawned on me that no one had ever built a sandwich concept for people like me, I had to do it! We started in 2013, and my motivation is my family first and foremost and followed by happy customers and great reviews. It feels great knowing that we are making a difference in people's everyday lives.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Giving people an opportunity to grow and work hard.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The sleepless nights and the stressors that come with the weight that no one sees or acknowledges.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start with a plan that makes sense.
  2. Have realities to what defines success for you.
  3. Be realistic about the time it will take to get where you want to be. It's going to take a very long time! Thanks to social media, we only hear about the very, very, very rare overnight success. Those are unicorns and don't happen often.
