Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alain Lemaire, executive chef and owner of Sensory Delights, located in Pembroke Pines, Florida, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are Sensory Delights Catering, a full-service boutique-style catering company based in South Florida. We offer services to weddings, private and corporate gatherings. We are a small black-owned business and focus on flavors from the Caribbean that reflect our heritage.

We service anyone who is having a party, wedding, or any type of celebration. We are based in South Florida, but our reach has no end.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a big fan of food, but most importantly, great food and beautifully presented. Our main goal has always been to bring a different side to the Caribbean food culture, especially when it comes to events. We are very passionate about providing great flavors, great service, and a total experience to our clients and their guests.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As a business owner, I would say that having our business being considered as a reference within our community and outside of it is a great accomplishment. We also take pride in having served some high-profile clients such as artists, actors, athletes, Government Officials, etc. We are proud of our Chef who has Competed/Appeared on several Food Network shows.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner has to be balanced. Being a small business owner comes with a lot of sacrifices and compromises that you never see before you start. Being in the food industry adds extra tension as well because you tend to miss out on holidays, birthdays, etc.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The top 3 tips would have to be:

  1. Put down your dreams and goals on paper.
  2. Plan accordingly and stick to it.
  3. Be patient and learn as much as you can.
