What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am 76 years old, and I offer online fitness coaching for seniors.
Tell us about yourself
I have been interested in fitness all my life. At 76, I know what I do works for me, and I want to share that knowledge with other seniors. What motivates me is that I can do whatever I want physically, and I am going to keep that ability as long as possible.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Since I have always liked exercising, I don't see my fitness level as an accomplishment; it's just who I am. But, if I can do it... others can as well.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest task I have is convincing others that exercising is worth the effort. Many seniors have been inactive for 20, 30, or even 40 years. They don't believe they can do anything that will be effective. They want the result but are not willing to make an effort.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
In my working career, I was a business turn-a-round consultant. I travelled all over North America fixing broken companies. The biggest problem was always that people did not know their numbers. They did not know what it really costs to produce whatever product they had. They had no idea how to build soft (overhead) costs into their price.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Everyone operating a business should take some basic financial management courses. It is easy to learn and pays dividends forever.
