Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sena Wheeler, founder of Sena Sea, located in Wenatchee, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a fifth-generation fishing family working hard to bring home the very best fish. Our goal is to deliver the consistent premium quality that we are so lucky to enjoy, direct to our customers.

We are not only fishermen but also run a small, fisherman-owned custom processing facility in Cordova, AK (60 North Seafoods), where we specialize in premium quality, sustainability, and traceability. This means the fish never leaves our hands, and we have complete control of our entire process… direct from our boats to your door!

Tell us about yourself

Rich does much of the fishing for Sena Sea, and we also source from fellow fishermen who share our high-quality standards and commitment to sustainability.

I have a master's degree in Nutrition and Food Science and work to exceed all expectations from quality to customer service, and am always available with great recipe ideas.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest accomplishment has been to infuse our business with our authentic story. Sena Sea is really us; it's our life story in the form of a business.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Writing is one of the hardest things but also the most rewarding. I never liked writing before we started this business and didn't realize that everything I do would involve writing... from website copy and product descriptions to sales emails and correspondence with customers. I have embraced the writing and now consider myself a writer.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start with a loan - don't try to do it out of pocket, there are more expenses than you think.
  2. Invest in yourself - business and writing courses.
  3. Delegate - I'm still working on this one, it's a challenge.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Our favorite way to connect with people is through our email list, where I write about fish and our real fishing lifestyle. Signup on our website.
