Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Selina Sosa, Founder of Ethnic Perspective, located in Dallas, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Ethnic Perspective was founded in October of 2016 after seeing a need in the community, especially for young Latinas. I noticed a lack of Latina representation in many areas of business, education, science, and technology.

Tell us about yourself

Growing up, the only Latina role models that were presented were those in the entertainment industry. My goal as a young woman was to make it in that world. As I grew older, I realized there was much more about women in our culture. Many are authors, CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, business owners, and leading women in science, but I knew nothing about them. My goal is simple, to network and connect with these women so we can connect them with young women interested in those fields. Our girls need to see women doing more than just what is presented to us by the media. So many women are changing lives daily and making strides in our cities and local communities.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In the process of starting our nonprofit, I authored a Young Women's devotional called Rise Up to Greatness. The devotional features the stories of 11 women who talk about their adversities and how they overcame those moments in their lives.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

People buying into your dream. You must be okay with others not believing in your dreams or goals. However, for every person that will not stand for or with you, there will be ten that will. Also, building a business for many takes time. Do not become discouraged when you see others who seem to succeed overnight. Trust the process; it takes time. Sometimes you may even have to step away for a season. This does not mean you have failed; it only means it is time to restrategize and come back stronger.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. When you feel like giving up, remember why you started in the first place. Nothing worth fighting for comes easy.
  2. Everything requires work, so put in the work!
  3. Never shy away from asking for help or advice.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I can not speak about the organization without spotlighting those who helped me start the venture. Shelly Cassady was with me from the beginning and was the VP for four years. She helped bring insight from the perspective of an educator. Briana Reyes & Rikeisha Cunningham-Byrd were my two college students on our board of directors. They helped provide insight into the needs of their generation. Since then, the faces of our organization have changed, but the heart behind the mission has not.
