Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ashley Furlong, co-founder of Selah Wellness, located in Philadelphia, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Selah Wellness is a health and wellness business in Philadelphia, PA. We provide health and wellness resources, services, and community support to help others enhance their health and vitality. We believe health and wellness are a lifestyle and want to help people turn knowledge into actions to support physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Tell us about yourself

We both (Ashley and Ali) worked in healthcare and saw gaps related to whole-person health and wellness. Health isn't about how you look but how you feel. So many of us settle for "just getting by," and we wanted to start uncovering how to change that. Our intention to create holistic services and resources is aimed at helping people uncover their health priorities and feel supported in building their own unique system that honors all parts of well-being. After we attended a wellness event in New York City led by Oprah, it really hit us that there weren't enough services highlighting HOW to improve well-being, and we wanted to change that.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As small business owners, it can be scary to take the first step. We are proud we've shown up for each other, our company, and our community for the past two years. Along the way, we've had to make adjustments and even face rejection, but our passion for our mission keeps our momentum strong.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

We feel like adjusting to the unknown is really challenging for anyone. When you start your own business, you are accountable for yourself. There is no security system to fall back on. It is a lot of learning and adapting, and you grow.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

First off, just begin. We realize you'll never have it all figured out, but you will figure things out one step at a time. Secondly, you never know the impact you are having. Even if it feels like you're hard work isn't paying off, we promise you it is. Lastly, get really clear on your mission and your intentions for your business. If these things aren't rooted in your values and interests, it is very difficult to stay motivated at the beginning when you might not be making a profit yet.
