What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a professional speaker and author. I have spoken all around the world, delivering over 1,800 presentations on leadership, team building, and thriving on change. I speak to corporations, associations, and universities. I've had the honor to present to such companies as Lockheed Martin, Starbucks, Kaiser Permanente, Microsoft, RE/MAX, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, and more than 1,000 more.

Tell us about yourself

I absolutely LOVE what I do! I have had three wonderful careers... first as a United States Swimming coach, then as a corporate vice president in the transportation industry, and for the last 31 years as a speaker and author. I do this wonderful work for a very simple but powerful reason... when I speak, I feel that I am doing what God put me here to do! I love helping people to break through fears, obstacles, habits that don't serve them, and doubts! That's why I'm known as America's Breakthrough Speaker!

Do you have daily rituals for work / wellness / fitness / mindfulness?

First, when I awaken, I recite St. Francis of Assisi's prayer for peace. I find it tremendously moving and beautiful. It centers me on being an instrument of peace.

Second, I always begin the day with gratitude and ask myself: What am I truly grateful for today? Gratitude is the most powerful of positive emotions.

Finally, I am a VERY early riser, and I walk a minimum of 5 miles each morning between 5:00 AM and 7:00 AM. For many years, I ran, but after three knee surgeries, I now walk. Sometimes, I simply 'percolate' during the walks and just allow thoughts to flow. Other times, I actually practice my upcoming talks. I love the quiet of the early morning and the inspiration of the sunrise.

One other ritual... just before I speak at every event, I spend a minute or two with a photo of my family. I focus on how much they mean to me and how much I want to be for them and give to them in whatever time I have left on this earth. It centers me and inspires me so that when I step up on stage, they are with me.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have owned my own business for 31 years and have had the honor of speaking before close to a million people. The joy of doing my very best to help others move closer to their true potential as they break through from fear to love is my most meaningful accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, the most difficult challenge and, at the same time, most satisfying aspect of successfully operating a business for more than 30 years is to constantly be open to change, adapt, take risks, learn, and grow!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Focus on three simple but incredibly powerful 'controllables:'

  1. Shape your future! What you focus on is what you CREATE!
  2. Energize and engage yourself and your team. Great energy comes from great purpose!
  3. Build people, teams, and relationships. No matter your industry, you are in the PEOPLE business! How you grow and help others grow will determine how far you GO!

Focus on what you put in, and great things will come out. Remember, responsibility is something you TAKE, and credit is something you GIVE!
