Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in art but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Susan Egbert, Owner of Segbert Studio, located in Roanoke, VA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a mixed media artist with a studio/gallery in Roanoke, VA.

Tell us about yourself

Art has always been a part of my life. My father was a commercial artist who left that field to do freelance art. I started entering art shows at around 12 years old with pen and ink drawings, received a BA in Fine Arts in upstate NY, and have been creating ever since. One of my strongest motivations is the beautiful landscape here in SW Virginia. Something that attracts me to a scene is the play of light and shadows.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I was a partner in a gallery in downtown Roanoke for 11 years. In all of my various business endeavors, I have been working in collaboration with other artists and believe we have succeeded because of pulling from each other's strengths.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

For me, the most difficult part involved the paperwork and the hours that took away from creating art.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If you are considering working with other artists, be sure you have a similar view on what you want to accomplish.
  2. Be prepared to work hard!
