Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in animal rescue but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michael S. Brown, Founder & CEO of Second Acts, located in La Crescenta, CA, USA.

What's your organization, and who are your members?

Second Acts is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit fundraising organization that distributes 100% of all donations received to small, volunteer-run animal rescue groups nationwide.

Tell us about yourself

As a lifelong animal lover, I founded Second Acts to assist those groups that do not receive the attention nor the funding that the larger, well-known organizations receive. My days are devoted to saving the lives of homeless dogs and cats and finding them loving, forever homes.

What's your biggest accomplishment as an organization?

We have issued grants to multiple rescue groups in all 50 states, resulting in the rescue of thousands of homeless dogs and cats.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being an organization?

Owning a business presents many challenges, including daily oversight and management of all departments, maintaining employee satisfaction, and ensuring that the organization's mission statement is being fulfilled.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow an organization today?

  1. Have a passion for whatever business you want to start.
  2. Know that you have the time it will take to make the business grow...and endure.
  3. Be comfortable making decisions.
