Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sean Quinn, CEO of Insight Hypnosis, located in Victoria, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Hypnotherapist with almost 30 years of experience. I find that the majority of my customers are looking for Smoking Cessation, but I also help people with Drug Addictions, PTSD, Phobias, Alcoholism, Confidence, Anxiety, Weight Control, Depression, etc. I've noticed that I get a lot of referrals from past successes as well as from therapists and doctors looking to find different ways to help their patients.

Tell us about yourself

Originally, I bought a book on Hypnosis from Chapters and attempted a trance induction with my girlfriend at the time. Understand that neither of us really expected it to work and were rather shocked when it did. Over the years, I've done a lot of training and study with hypnosis and found that I could help people really change their lives. Quite frankly, watching people get a handle on things with this just feels so amazingly rewarding. The stories I hear of how it's changed peoples' lives really help make it feel like I'm doing something meaningful.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

One of the biggest accomplishments I've found is that I can run a business and make a good income while still having time to live my life. To get things in balance where the bills are paid, surpluses are invested, and yet still have time to see friends, travel, read books, go on hikes, take up new hobbies, strategize, etc. It's been amazing to find a balance between earning a living and actually living.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think the hardest thing about being a business owner is really just getting started. It all seems so daunting at first until you recognize that it's all just taking small steps and watching them turn into a larger journey. Quite frankly, one of my biggest regrets was not starting sooner.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

You have to understand that if you are going to be a business owner, you need to learn Marketing. I've seen so many people in my field get all excited after completing their training course, buying a pocket watch to swing in someone's face (jk, we don't actually do that..), and then fizzling out within six months when they've run out of money to keep going. Recognize that you are a Business Owner first, a Marketer second, and then whatever your product or service is third. No one will ever know what you were trying to sell if they've never heard of you. It is absolutely imperative that you learn how to market yourself effectively, or else it's just not going to work out.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I think one of the other big lessons I've learned was that you don't need to know everything before getting started with your own business. One of my mentors put it thusly: Ready, FIRE!, Aim. I started off as one of those researchers that wanted to know everything before I took the first step. Reading all the books, taking all the courses, making sure not to make a mistake. I now realize that itself was a mistake. You are far better at learning as you go, making your mistakes, and researching solutions for your specific needs as you find them. Business (and life in general) are too unpredictable to even know what to study for. You really won't know what you need to learn until you are actually running the show. If you want to learn everything before pulling that trigger, you will never start.
