Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in skin care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Roberta Perry, Owner of ScrubzBody Skin Care Products, located in Farmingdale, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Hello! My company is ScrubzBody Skin Care Products, but my business is really offering people a chance for self-care and pampering. Too often, we forget to care for ourselves because we are running around working or caring for others.

My entire goal at ScrubzBody is to remind people that pampering oneself is not only necessary but key to self-love and mental preservation. Our products make this kind of care easy, so it encourages the experience.

My sweet spot customer falls between 45-65, but we round out our audience with kids' parties, office parties, and bridal and baby showers through our "Make Your Own Scrubz Parties." The parties give us a chance to really pamper our guests while they are learning about the benefits of great skincare.

Tell us about yourself

I am a business that began at the kitchen table, then moved to a space in the garage, then moved three times as I was seeking out the best space for a production and retail shop. But it really started with my wanting a better scrub. I had purchased something like 20 different brands of scrubs, from the cheap kind to the expensive ones and everything in between, and none were "the best." So I researched and used what I liked about some of the jars and changed what I didn't care for.

After bringing in my late sister, we began to share our love and natural skincare with others. We went from craft fairs and working late nights in my garage to our sleek and welcoming shop in the village of Farmingdale, NY. My customers and business friends are what motivate me daily. I just love learning new ideas and opportunities, so it continually helps me thrive.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is the relationships I have built with my customers, my business associates, and my vendors, who are friends that happen to make extraordinary products. Money is necessary for business survival, but true business growth is counted in way more than dollar bills.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing is finding the right people to work with. I need staff who will share my vision and offer my customers the same type of "make you feel like you entered a spa" experience that I would offer them. Thankfully I have that person. Wendy is my BFF from back in the day and is basically my voice when I am not here. My production staff is trained with that same kind of customer service appreciation.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Treat people with gratitude for spending their money with you.
  2. Hone your customer base and really speak to that group. Make sure your brand or service looks and feels right for that audience.
  3. Gather emails with every transaction so you can send direct-to-consumer messages without having to rely on social media platforms. There is nothing like the personal one-to-one approach.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Having a business is the greatest gift I could ever have imagined. But it was and is lots of work and lots of the "rinse and repeat" type of daily chores. But at the end of the day, having the freedom to create something that pleases customers and creates a lifestyle I love is incredible and worthy and special.
