Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Scott Mautz, Founder of Profound Performance, located in San Diego, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a keynote speaker, trainer, workshopper, course creator, and author. My customers are Learning & Development executives looking for high-impact offerings to improve their organizations' leadership/self-leadership skills or the individual execs themselves looking to proactively improve these skills.

Tell us about yourself

I was in corporate and decided that I wanted to broaden my platform for making a difference (with the spoken and written word). Every day, this still drives me - the thought, "How can my work make a difference in leaders' lives? How can I add value and solve problems they have?"

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My company, Profound Performance, has achieved 20-30% growth each year for six years.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Saying no to opportunities and believing that if I close a door, another window will open.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be very clear on your purpose. Why are you starting the business? For what higher-order reason (beyond just making money). It's this sense of purpose that will keep you going on down days.
  2. Be very clear on your target audience and your niche. "Anyone with a dollar in their pocket willing to buy my offering" is not a target audience.
  3. Outsource all the work you're not good at or don't enjoy so you can focus on spending time on however you bring the most unique value to the business.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Don't take the highs too high or the lows too low. Remember that if you don't truly believe in what you're doing, then how can you expect anyone else to? Be willing to change your approach along the way to respond to market trends
