Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in consultancy but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Scott Kellen, co-founder of Kellen Consulting Group LLC., located in Vesuvius, VA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Kellen Consulting Group is a premier consulting agency based out of Virginia. We are a service-disabled veteran-owned small business. Our certified coaches and consultants have over 100 years of combined leadership experience and experience working with the military and federal government agencies. We also have extensive experience working with businesses of all sizes, from small business entrepreneurs to large corporations.

Tell us about yourself

What motivates me can be summed up in my personal mission statement "To provide support and inspiration to others through leadership, wisdom, and expertise."

We started Kellen Consulting Group because we felt we had much to offer in helping and inspiring others. We had an opportunity in our lives to embrace the entrepreneurial spirit that is in each one of us, and we wanted to help entrepreneurs and small business owners become more successful and grow.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would have to say that getting positive reviews and feedback from the clients and small businesses that we have been able to coach and mentor is my biggest accomplishment. Knowing that others have enough trust in me and my opinions to make meaningful changes in how they operate their businesses and improve the culture within their organizations means everything.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Understanding all of the various state and local regulatory requirements to get started and then remaining in compliance with applicable business and tax laws is what I found the hardest; if you have a great idea and a passion for what you've decided to undertake, then the rest seems to fall into place.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know why you want to start and run the business model or idea that you have selected.
  2. Have a great deal of energy, perseverance, and patience. At first, things can feel a bit daunting, and the initial investment in time and energy can also be quite draining; hang in there.
  3. Don't be afraid to ask for help and establish networks of people that will help hold you accountable.
