Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sandra Waldner, Owner of Scott Creek Roastery, located in Elie, MB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We roast coffee from many regions, and we supply our own unique blends. We supply "wellness" coffee — flavoured with spices and herbs.

Tell us about yourself

We meet new people and enjoy our repeat customers. Staying a small-time roaster where you get to know your customers, talking about new blends, and becoming a go-to for personality roasting. I love it. And we also customize gift baskets and fundraising, all with a personal hands-on touch. That's why I love what I'm doing.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The plan was to roast coffee for ourselves and family and friends. Selling the first bag of coffee to a customer was quite an accomplishment. Our biggest accomplishment is having the customer come back and become a friend.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Increasing the prices of products.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You need to be unique. Don't be afraid to take risks to try different things.
  2. Your customer deserves the best. Appreciate everyone.
  3. Reach out to learn. Reach out to people that can help grow your business.
