Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in professional development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Scott Asai, a keynote speaker, based in Santa Monica, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I teach soft skill strategies to develop leaders in the workplace. I specialize in teaching communication, leadership, and emotional intelligence to managers in the technology industry because they tend to be hard-skill-dominated.

Tell us about yourself

I started my business 15 years ago because I wanted the freedom and flexibility to spend time the way I choose. I love seeing the potential in people, developing their strengths, and putting them in a position to succeed.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

A personal challenge to myself in 2019 was to land a TEDx Talk. After several months of applying, interviewing, and preparing, I did a TEDx Talk entitled "Saving Soft Skills from Extinction" in Hawaii.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Not having a steady paycheck, but the real challenge is creating structure daily, weekly and monthly basis.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Research the market and industry you plan to do business in to ensure there is a need for your product/service. Network with people for mentors, partners, and customers. Don't quit your paying job until you've proven sales from your business are the same or more than your current role.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Don't just follow your passion. If you can't get paid for it, it's only a hobby, not a business.
