Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Greg Schermbeck, founder of SchermCo, located in Charlotte, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

SchermCo is a national social-impact implementation firm that offers strategic advising, organizational development, and implementation services to schools and education-focused organizations that support underserved communities. We reinvest 1% of our time/funds back into the communities we serve. Our customers include school leaders, superintendents, and executives within the non-profit, social impact, and workforce development sectors.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a first-generation college graduate, and my parents put a premium on education since I was young. I began my career as a teacher through Teach For America and continue to be passionate and focused on access to equitable education opportunities for students and families in underserved communities. Through my experience teaching and helping to open a charter school and graduate school, I deeply felt that there was an opportunity to open a firm that helps leaders implement strategies that capture actual results for the stakeholders they serve. We are motivated by these opportunities every day we get to work.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

On a serious note, we've been fortunate to help our strategy partners collectively raise $3M+ to support their work, build tailored family empowerment programs across 16 schools, and so many other accomplishments with our clients. We're honored to join forces with many innovative leaders and organizations across the country.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I spend lots of time creating structure when I should be working in the business and working on the business. Having a clear sense of my schedule and related activities each day has been a helpful habit for me to overcome this challenge.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be patient.
  2. Be sure you love the work you aspire to do.
  3. Work harder. The business won't build itself.
