Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Wendy Millsap, Founder of Scent Marketing Studio, located in Dallas, TX, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Scent Marketing Studio offers private label scent manufacturing services. We help brands create their scent story. Our product offerings include candles, room sprays, and scent machines with refill programs. Our clients are brands that understand the power of scent marketing. Our custom-label fragrance programs are presented as retail brands and non-profit and corporate gifts.
Tell us about yourself
The business started as a home-based business in 2008. My first clients were historic home tours. The company was originally launched under the name Lakewood Candle Company, which was named after the heart of the East Dallas historic districts. Living in a historic district, I wanted a way to give back to the community. I started making commemorative candles, selling them at the home tours, and giving proceeds back to the neighborhoods. The business grew and expanded to service brands and companies throughout the States and Europe.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I love helping clients create their scent stories - every brand is unique. With over 300 fragrances in our library of scents, we are able to guide each client to a unique scent presentation.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I am a perfectionist, so the hardest part of being a business owner is being my own biggest critic. However, in the end, it serves my clients and me well.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
When starting a business, it is important to define your product/service offering, know your audience and stay focused. When I started offering custom label candles in 2008, friends and family questioned the need for private label candle services. Now, the market demands custom products and services in almost all product categories. I believed in my concept and stuck with it.
