Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Frumi Barr, Founder of Scale Up Advisors, LLC., located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I work with entrepreneurs and their teams. The ones who want to win by laying a strong foundation to grow sustainably. At the Barr Business School, we work with new or aspiring leaders who want to start, fund, and grow their businesses.

We teach everything that is not taught in conventional business schools. In the trenches, learning online, with multiple book summaries, enhances learning. In addition to the course, we offer to coach and to mentor to accelerate results.

Tell us about yourself

I am known as the CEO’s secret weapon. I focus on culture first to create an environment that allows for the right decisions to be made regarding vision, culture, strategy, metrics, execution, and cash management. My why: to create a safe place for leaders and teams to discuss what matters most. My Who: She guides creative, ambitious CEOs who want to grow their businesses so they have more freedom and fabulous culture. My How: I work with companies of all sizes to scale up and create greater alignment, effectiveness, and accountability to gain traction.

I am an author; my book, A CEO's Secret Weapon: How to Accelerate Success, was just re-released as an audiobook. The book has a foreword by Simon Sinek. As a lifelong entrepreneur, I have a "portfolio" career. Everything I do has to do with entrepreneurs. In addition to being a coach and mentor, I am the co-founder of a pet technology company and a cannabis company, and I have just founded the Barr Business School.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is having had multiple successful, fast-growing businesses while at the same time raising a family of four children. I am a master of work-life integration. No maternity leave for us female entrepreneurs—we keep on spinning all the plates no matter what!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a business owner is managing the critics in our heads. Nothing is ever good enough or moves fast enough. We have to manage our self-talk and exercise our resilience muscles.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Develop an entrepreneurial growth mindset. Always be learning.
  2. Cultivate resilience and tenacity. Believe in yourself.
  3. Know your "why" for getting up every morning and soldiering on. The best way to fail is to just give up.
