Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Stacy Berg Jackson, founder and CEO of SBJ Consulting, Inc., located in Palm Beach Gardens, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

SBJ Consulting, Inc. is a boutique leadership coaching, training & development, and thought partner services firm. We deliver highly personalized executive coaching, training, and keynote presentations focused on developing more confident, self-aware leaders, engaged teams, and high-functioning workplaces.

Tell us about yourself

I have been in Human Resources and the Human Capital space for over 20 years. I am energized and motivated by the incredible leaders I have the privilege of working and partnering with every day. Knowing that I may have a small part in their development and growth as individuals, as they improve their own lives and relationships with others, is tremendously gratifying.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Among the biggest accomplishments over the past two years is that we have survived and thrived during this tumultuous time in our global history. It certainly was not an easy task, personally or professionally; however, we were able to carry on and become a certified women-owned small business (WOSB) by the Small Business Administration. We continued to move forward with strength and fearlessness.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think one of the most challenging tasks of being a business owner is knowing when to take a break and recharge your own battery. Owning a business is 24/7. It's on you to make it work and make it successful. Yet, nothing is successful if it's not sustainable. So the idea of unplugging from your business has to be part of your business plan if the business plans on surviving for the long haul.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Develop or cultivate a thick skin and a short memory. Rejection will be frequent, and your ability to brush it off, move on and keep going will be paramount to your success.
  2. Surround yourself with cheerleaders who believe in you. You will have enough self-doubt on your own. Try to limit external doubters and doomsayers that might derail your progress.
  3. Be passionate about serving others. You've got to start from a place of service before you are ready to receive.
