Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sam Hobson Fairman, Founder of Sauce Media Group, located in Salt Lake City, UT, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

In 2019, I was still licking my wounds from my first failed business when I began noticing so many incredible brands with not-so-incredible social media channels. Growing up in the era of Instagram & being handed the social media duties at every job I worked at, I felt like running successful accounts was half of my personality. So naturally, I made it my entire life's work & brought Sauce Media Group into the world.

Sauce is a social media marketing agency that specializes in working with creative brands targeting Gen Z / Young Millennial customers. Our mission is to bring creative brands' visions to life through social media & creative direction. We let the brands handle what they're good at while we translate their mission on social media.

Tell us about yourself

I always knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur of some sort but never did I think I'd own a marketing agency... I don't even have a marketing degree! Speaking of degrees, mine is in Fashion Merchandising, which I put to work in my early 20's as a freelance wardrobe stylist & visual merchandiser. After making an attempt at owning my own clothing boutique, I quickly learned that fashion wasn't meant to be my entire world.

Que the social media inquiries!

After finally closing up my clothing shop, I began to receive a strange amount of inquiries from people in my network about hiring me for social media help. As these rolled in, it dawned on me that my favorite part of the fashion world was the social media piece! Thus, Sauce Media Group was born.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment would have to be my choice to pick myself back up after my failed business & trying again. There were many times when I thought I was actually insane for putting myself through another venture but what I learned was that the right path for YOU isn't as hard as trying to force yourself into a dream that isn't meant for you. When you follow your passions & intuition, you're met with way less resistance along the way. Not saying I haven't had my struggles with Sauce -- believe me, I have! But the struggles are nothing compared to my first business because my current line of work is absolutely my passion.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Anything that goes wrong in the business ultimately falls on me. It comes with the territory, but it would be nice to run & hide sometimes! All jokes aside, it's a lot of responsibility. But I'm a strong believer that "that which supports life, life supports" - (Tony Robbins), meaning when you are working towards a better future & providing opportunities to those around you, that energy will have your back & support you along the way.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

First, make sure you have a product or service people actually want/need! Test it out on a small scale first before you do anything too crazy & get burned! Second, get ready to face your demons. Seriously, running a business is 80% about your mindset. You'll be forced to work on things in your life that you'd never expect, but in the end, you're always better for it.

Third, yes, your business is your "baby," but babies are needy & that gets tiring after a while. Find ways to let your business grow up & stand on its own so you can enjoy your life! That's what this is all about - creating the freedom to live life on your terms.
