Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Kenneth Kaufman, President and CEO of Sarasota Sports Medicine, located in Sarasota, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a sports medicine and therapy clinic. We serve a variety of patients that have suffered sports injuries.

Tell us about yourself

I opened my office right out of school, treating patients as a traditional chiropractor. Over the past 30 years, we have developed a diverse multidisciplinary practice serving patients suffering from a variety of sports injuries. We care for individuals of all ages and athletic abilities, including young high school athletes. Through our treatment process, we often save our young patients from surgery, and they usually return to their sport better than before they were injured. It's extremely gratifying when one of these athletes comes back to tell me they were able to secure a scholarship for college.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Building an impeccable reputation in my community and having an incredible team dedicated to our mission.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Wearing multiple hats throughout each day. It's a challenge to care for a patient for one minute and then focus on business, marketing, staff, accounts payable, accounts receivable, advertising, etc.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Plan, plan, plan. Create a solid plan to build your business. Take into account as many variables as you're going to face and have a plan to overcome any challenges.
  2. Everything is going to cost you more than you think. Make sure to have plenty of reserve cash available to deal with the downturns in your business. Every business has downturns, don't make the mistake of thinking you'll be the exception.
  3. Be an expert in managing cash. Cash flow is the lifeblood of your business.
