Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah Thompson, co-founder of ThompsonStenning Creative Group, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I founded ThompsonStenning Creative Group in 2014, along with Sheldon Stenning. We offer polished and professional design and development services to both local and international civic and non-profit organizations. As visual communicators, we are passionate about our work and have an eye for business. Our strong focus is on creative collaboration, insightful solutions, and relationship-building. We strive to inspire our community through thoughtful design.

Tell us about yourself

I am a passionate designer with an emphasis on branding. I love all things typography and admire wonderfully designed, user-friendly communication pieces - both digital and print. We started ThompsonStenning Creative Group after having negative experiences with design agencies. We did not enjoy the lack of work/life balance and wanted to do work for clients we felt were making positive changes in the world.

We are motivated each day by the need to support the wonderful people who are our clients, they work hard to educate the public on topics such as human rights, environmental crises, education, and more, and it's our job to make their work accessible to their communities and the world at large.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest accomplishment as business owners is the ability to support our local and international clients in creating a bigger impact via a strong creative foundation, impactful brand, and meaningful visual print and digital communication pieces.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Wearing many hats! We're constantly needing to jump into different roles in order to keep our business running smoothly.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Consistency is key – one day at a time, don't expect massive growth overnight. Make a business plan, write down your goals, make daily to-do lists, and thoughtfully tick off those boxes!
  2. Communication – stay on top of all your communications. Quickly communicating with clients and vendors shows them you're motivated to work with them.
  3. Rest and recharge – no one can give 100% all the time! Prioritize your physical, mental, and emotional health. When you are rested and recharged, you can face your day with a level head on your shoulders.
