Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah Thacker, a Licensed Psychotherapist and Certified EMDR Therapist based in Larchmont, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a licensed psychotherapist and certified EMDR therapist, offering a holistic approach to mental and emotional well-being. In my private practice, I am dedicated to supporting those who struggle with emotional eating, eating disorders, anxiety, trauma, perfectionism, panic attacks, creative blocks, somatic discomfort, and challenging life transitions. I am also a certified yoga therapist and certified holistic health coach, and I integrate a variety of therapeutic techniques based on each individual's unique needs. I believe that everyone deserves and has the capacity to feel their best in mind, body, and spirit. Additionally, I am the author of the book Wholistic Food Therapy: A Mindful Approach to Making Peace with Food, which is a workbook and expressive journal to support those who struggle with emotional eating.

Tell us about yourself

I took a psychology class as a senior in high school and knew that I wanted to work in the mental health field since the very first class. I genuinely love what I do and work to create a supportive, accepting, and safe place for people to heal. I am motivated by how hard my clients work and how willing they are to go inward and do the hard work to heal.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I am grateful to work in my field, and I feel my biggest accomplishment is getting to consistently grow and expand my knowledge base while offering these powerful methodologies and tools to those I work with. I have also created an online course and published the aforementioned book, which was big undertaking, and I am very proud of them!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I work alone and have to manage the ins and outs of my business on my own. For me, the hardest things are the true business tasks that must be done, such as advertising, taxes, billing, and self-promotion. However, again, I am grateful for the work I get to do, and I try to be sure to carve out time for these more tedious tasks that have to get done.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Three tips I'd recommend when starting a business from scratch are,

  1. Hire a coach to help with the setup, especially if you don't have any business training. Someone to guide and support you can save you a lot of time and agony!
  2. Get an accountability partner. If you talk with someone who is also starting a running their own business, it can be supportive and helpful to set goals and have someone outside of yourself to be accountable to along the way.
  3. Don't overschedule. When I first started, I overextended myself, and it's natural to want to get it all done at once; however, you want to set yourself up for success, not burnout!
