Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in content creation but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah Strackhouse, Founder, and CEO of Strackhouse Media, located in Dallas, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own a multi-media company focused on videography, photography, and live event production. Our audience is anyone who wants to tell a story! As a journalist who also hires journalists, that's our main goal - to tell YOUR story. Whether that's a video showcasing your craft or a conference or other event where you bring in speakers to inspire your team, we want to help you tell YOUR story and what sets you apart from your competition. We also have a digital TV show where we have guests and interview them about what they do.

Tell us about yourself

Telling stories has always been an important part of my life. I've worked in the news since graduating college for different stations across the country, including New York City and Dallas, Texas. In 2018, I made the change to digital broadcast and continued to tell stories by creating videos and two interview-style shows. When I had a baby in 2021, I decided to start my own business because I wanted to be able to make more of an impact on my clients' lives. Now, I'm working for my clients and my family, and that continues to drive me each and every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner was the first month I was able to afford my family mortgage on the money I had made in my business. Relationships, hustle, and low overhead have allowed me to build my business quickly, and now I'm at a point where I'm making more money than I ever have, I'm spending more time with my family than I ever have, and I'm the happiest I've ever been.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest part for me was learning how to sell. I've had to build relationships my whole life as a reporter, and you learn how to get a person to speak and open up to you, but that final step of making the sale was a tough one to learn. I also learned how long that sales pipeline could be. Follow-up and meeting new connections are key.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Find your niche, network, and work hard. Staying organized in those three tips will help you continue to feel progress.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I almost gave up and started looking for new jobs again, but if you have a skill (and everyone does), find the right niche, and continue to work hard, giving up will no longer be an option.
