Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah McAtee, Founder of Sarah Michelle Coaching, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Mindset Coach that focuses on the subconscious mind, which means my coaching deals directly with the subconscious and the beliefs it holds. "What you believe about, you bring about." Everything that you have ever created in your life, you did because of the belief system you have subconsciously programmed. I work with Ambitious Creatives who have a deep desire to experience their fullest potential. They have tried everything they can consciously think of to make their dreams a reality, but they still have not materialized. In other words, they know the "what," but they don't know the "how" I am there to bridge the gap for them.

Tell us about yourself

When I was 13, I had a teammate tell me a matter of factly, "Sarah, you're going to be a Life Coach when you grow up!" At the time, I didn't know exactly what that meant, but Life Coaching showed up again in my life when one of my college roommates started informally referring to me as her Life Coach. I just started laughing it off as I didn't think Life Coaching was a real career option. At the time, I was studying to be a Marriage and Family Therapist. Well fast forward to 2014, when a friend reached out and asked if I wanted a free coaching session. Midway through the session, she said, "You know, Sarah, my intuition keeps telling me that you need to be a Life Coach. You should look into getting certified." I realized at that moment that Life Coaching had been knocking at my door for the last ten years, and I probably should see where this takes me. I got certified in 2015 with a Law of Attraction-based Life Coaching company and was offered a position working closely with the president of that company. Although the company is no longer around, it's still some of the best training I have ever received. For the last seven years, I have been studying and practicing the Law of Attraction and the power of the subconscious mind. Although I started out as a Life Coach, I now refer to myself as a Subconscious Mind Coach. My passion really lies in coaching on the subconscious mind and being a witness to the massive shifts that happen when we reprogram our minds and rewrite our story.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In my line of work, I think the biggest accomplishment you can feel is seeing the transformation my clients have in their thinking. As the new conditioning begins to take effect, they start to word things differently, they start to catch themselves when they are going down a mental path that doesn't serve them, and they start seeing situations from a place of responsibility, causing them to stand fully in their power, and of course, they start to attract amazing people and opportunities into their life. Having a front-row seat to their journey is really a true honor.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think the longest-standing obstacle I faced was building a business (and spending money to do that) while working full-time to support myself financially. There were months where I would have to put my Life Coaching dream on the back burner so that I could focus on staying afloat. But I think that's where leveraging the Law of Attraction comes in handy. I manifested so many opportunities over the years that helped me keep building them. Whether that was weeks, I wasn't exchanging time for money but was still getting paid, or manifesting jobs where I made more money per hour so that I could decrease my hours. At the end of the day, I love this work, and it has made all the bumps in the road worth it!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you are starting a business doing something you LOVE! You won't last if it's not something that lights you up. Would you still be doing this if money wasn't a thing and you weren't getting any monetary value from it?
  2. Start a business knowing this is a marathon, not a sprint. Starting off with the right mindset and perspective is the difference between someone who gives up and someone who perseveres through setbacks.
  3. Have a source of income that does not exchange your time for money. I suggest setting yourself up financially before starting the business so that you can really build it without distractions.
