What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is creating soap that smells good but combats dry skin. My customers are mostly women 25-35, but I do have loyal male followers. One of whom purchases a load every year around Christmas time!
Tell us about yourself
My name is Sidney Brooks. My mom taught my sister and me how to make soap. It was a family thing, and as I grew older, I just started loving it more and more. What motivated me was when my sister passed, I wanted her to know even from heaven, I was going to keep up with our craft. I know she is watching and so proud of me. That's what keeps me going.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is selling to my mother. I usually give her all the end pieces because she is my mom. Well, one day, my mother purchased another bar and told me how good it was, and even when offering to give it to her, she wanted to purchase it because it was that good. Nothing can compare to my momma telling me my soap is wonderful.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I'm a one-person business, so I literally do everything from making, packaging, finding supplies, etc. I also have a two-year-old who is a sticker fanatic. She loves to get into things, so running after her and orders, etc., always makes life a little harder, but I love the tussle of day-to-day business!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Don't give up! Some people have to have time to see your vision, but if they don't, that's fine too! It's always good to have family back for you, but sometimes they won't, not even friends, and that's ok as well. Create a following and post, and post. Have a self-care day, especially if you're a one-person business. Trust me; you're going to need it.
