Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sandra Costello, Owner of Sandra Costello Photography, located in Eastham, MA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Portrait and Personal Branding Photographer. I help women bravely step into their power with extraordinary portraits that reveal their essence.

Tell us about yourself

I'm Sandra Costello, and I love you already. I'm small but mighty with a big heart. I'm ready to embrace my clients just as they are, exactly as they are, and that has always been my mission. I meet women where they're at and draw out their essence. When women feel relaxed and comfortable in their own skin, they will always radiate their authenticity.

I think self-exploration is a path we travel our whole life, and portraits are an important and beautiful way to record the process of becoming. I am more than just a photographer. I am a cheerleader, a coach, and my client's biggest fan. I love brave moments and celebrating every win.

I believe every day is a gift, compassion connects us, and being yourself is sexy. I am committed to creating a safe, inclusive, empowering, and fun space.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I knew I was on to something when I could effortlessly articulate my mission in my voice. It guided all of my communications, my decisions, and the face of my business. When I could reveal myself with true authenticity, then my clients could trust me to do the same for them, and when clients know, like, and trust you, relationship-building comes naturally and joyfully.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Staying in your own lane. I think it's really easy to be distracted by what others are doing, but ultimately, when you work from your heart and know what makes you come alive, that is the direction you need to follow. If you seek business guidance, find a coach or mentor, and then get to work. Working hard, tweaking as you go, and working with intention will always get you there.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be compassionate and be real with yourself. Sometimes we desire to step out on our own, but it's important to gather the support we need to do the job well. Reach out and build your community; it will make all the difference.
  2. Start now. Whether you begin your business as a side hustle or take the leap, you don't know how it will go until you're in it.
  3. Don't be afraid to change things if they're not working; those ideas can come from anywhere. Keep an open mind and listen to your heart.
